MOTORCYCLE STEREO SYSTEM, SPEAKERS, AND AUDIO GUIDE

Updated: May 7

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT AFTERMARKET MOTORCYCLE STEREO INSTALLATION IN SAN DIEGO

Nothing compares to the exhilarating feeling of riding your motorcycle through the beautiful San Diego landscape. The warm sun against your back and a cool breeze in your face instantly melt away the stress of sitting at your desk all day. As you relish in the freedom of cruising around town on a sunny afternoon, you realize something is missing: a soundtrack. Your bike came with an audio system, but the sound is weak and you can barely hear your favorite music when you’re ripping down the freeway at 80 mph. If you often find yourself in this pickle, then an upgrade is in order.

With a Harley-Davidson® stereo system and speakers, you can enjoy Tom Petty’s greatest hits with crystal-clear sound quality at any speed. There are a lot of options to consider when selecting a motorcycle stereo system for your Harley, and figuring out which speakers are going to give you the best riding experience can be tricky. You’ll want speakers that are tough enough to handle vibrations, heat, wind, dust, and the occasional rainstorm. And of course, they have to sound good, too.

Our motorcycle stereo installation experts pulled together a motorcycle stereo system and audio guide to help you make an informed buying decision. Below are a few things to think about when selecting a stereo system and speakers that will really rock.

TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE SPEAKERS

Let’s be honest, the factory speakers on a Harley-Davidson® are just plain lousy. Installing a new set of speakers is an easy way to drastically enhance your listening experience for a more enjoyable ride. When it comes to the type of speaker, you’ll have to decide if you want motorcycle helmet speakers or handlebar speakers. It all comes down to personal preference, but handlebar speakers are a more popular choice for bikers.

We like the Shark Spk6800-spks because they’re affordable, they’re compatible with any motorcycle amplifier, and they’re weatherproof.

MOTORCYCLE SPEAKER WATTAGE

Average factory motorcycle stereos give off 10 to 15 watts of power to each speaker. For most, that’s not enough oomph to hear your music even at cruising speeds. When shopping for new Harley-Davidson® speakers, look for a product with at least 300 watts. If you’re a highway rider, aim for closer to 600 watts. The higher the wattage, the better your music will sound when it’s turned up to full blast.

For maximum power, we like the BOSS Audio MC420B bluetooth stereo system. It has a 600-watt amplifier and wireless audio streaming capabilities.

BELLS & WHISTLES FOR A MOTORCYCLE AUDIO SYSTEM

Many Harley-Davidson® stereo systems come with extra features to make listening to music on your motorcycle fun and convenient. Check out models with handlebar thumb controls, bluetooth integration, and a docking station that will charge and hold your iPhone or Android smartphone. These features usually add to the price of a motorcycle stereo system, but they’re well worth the extra investment for most riders.

For a setup that offers a bit more than the rest, check out the BOSS Audio MC470B bluetooth stereo system. It comes with two sets of speakers, a 1000-watt amplifier, and bluetooth audio streaming.

MOTORCYCLE STEREO INPUT SOURCE

Your Harley-Davidson® motorcycle speakers will need an input source. Without one, there would be no music to blast on your ride to the beach. You can use a head unit and/or your smartphone. A head unit mounts directly into the dashboard of your motorcycle and comes with different features like an AM/FM radio, a CD player, and a digital clock. The speakers plug directly into the head unit. Another option is to just connect your smartphone to the speakers using the headphone jack or bluetooth connection.
